Ganga de Allariz

The idea of jumble sales, car boot sales and second hand or opportunity shops is common in England and Australasia but not so in this part of Spain. So the very first Vintage come second hand market in Allariz caused quite a stir; even making the headlines in La Voz, a leading Galician newspaper. Called la Ganga in Gallego the market in Abastos square attracted 3,000 people over the first weekend of August. So keen were some that a somewhat disorderly queue had formed well before Sunday’s opening time. Packed into the small hall were 14 stall holders who did their best to cope with the crush of onlookers, buyers and the curious. Books, cds. cassettes, videos, video games and clothes ranging from genuine vintage to the merely odd were all on sale for prices starting at 1€. Particularly popular were those gifts we have all received from some well meaning aunt but have never quite worked out what it was or what it could be used for – there is seemingly a strong local market for such memorabilia.                                                                  

Feeding the masses was the lovely Belen with a range of sandwiches and snacks which were, in keeping with the Ganga spirit, all for 1€.  The locally made lager, Dama Alaricana was also on sale and was a great hit with the thirsty hordes. August as ever in Allariz is packed with local and national tourists but the usual haunts by the river and out by the swimming pool were seriously depleted as everyone came to see what bargains could be found in this time of crisis.

So popular was the event in fact that another market is being considered for October and a larger version for Xmas – just in time to resell that ceramic whatsit that you’ve been wondering “why did I buy that” ever since August.

Allariz for Free

The crisis is squeezing us all, but we all deserve a break even if it’s only a short one. To help you plan your summer we have prepared a list of things you can do in Allariz for free and some things that cost very little.

Free Activities

  Hiking: Allariz has over 100 km of trails suitable for hiking or biking activities. They are of differing levels of difficulty and range from an hour to a full day so all levels of fitness will find something suitable. The walks are along the rivers and through the forests following old drover paths that have existed for centuries. The views are spectacular.

Sunbathing, swimming in the river and picnic areas: Along the banks of the river Arnoi and without leaving Allariz, there are 10 places where you can relax, read and take a dip in the clean river waters surrounded by nature. Why not organize a picnic and spend the day. Some of the areas even have barbecues.

  Visit the Old Town: A walk through the medieval past of Galicia with churches, monasteries, traditional houses with typical Galician galleries and all on cobblestone streets.

Allariz markets: The 1st and 15th of each month sees the arrival of the traditional country fair in the area in front of the monastery at the top of the village. Here you can buy everything from bread and cheese to fresh fruit and vegetables to clothes to farm equipment. There are large tents set up for lunch so you can enjoy meat from the bbq and the wonderful pulpo (octopus). Every Saturday morning there is a small market for products     from the biosphere. Here you can find cheese, fruit and vegetables, chorizos and honey.

In September there is the arts and crafts fair and also a festival dedicated to the traditional cakes and sweets of the area.

Internet: In the municipal library and in many of the bars and cafes you have access to free WIFI. Unfortunately no one sells English books or newspapers in Allariz. For these you will need to visit Ourense some 20kms away.

Unusual visits: In Penama, one of the mountains of Allariz you can see a rare breed of cow - the Limiá cow. With distinctive horns they roam in enormous paddocks in a wild and wonderful landscape just ten minutes from the centre of Allariz.. If you continue along this road you arrive in San Cibrao where there are prehistoric stone dolmens, an ancient stone church and some amazing views back down to Allariz.

  In the Rexo area close to the village of Requiexo there is a sheep farm you can visit. Here the sheep are used for their milk which produces an excellent cheese. The amazing thing is that these sheep graze in areas by the river that have been painted by the artist Agustin Ibarrola, who created a bewildering landscape of huge painted stones and decorated trees. Guided tours are available and you can buy the cheese from a small shop on site.

Santa Marina is a small village just 8kms from Allariz. It is a an area full of legends and is still reputed to have witches even today. One of the stories dates back to Roman times when a local woman was tortured then sacrificed for her Christian beliefs. The ruins of the church built above the spot she was killed is still there as are remains of an old celtic village.

Sports: There are parks where you can play but there is also an official sports centre with football fields, tennis courts and padel ( a cross between tennis and squash) courts which can be hired. There is the public swimming pool but you can always swim in the river for free

Festivals: from 13 to 15 July the festival of San Benito and 18 to August 19 it is the Empanada (Galician savoury pies) festival

Activities for less than 3€

  Museums: Allariz has several museums: the leather museum which also has a workshop where you can see Ernesto and his team working and buy souvenirs, there are two sacred art museums, a fascinating toy museum and a working flour mill. Entry costs 1€ each but you can buy a pass to visit them all for just 3.50€

International Garden Festival: A spectacle of colour and imagination applied to gardening. Several international designers compete in this festival with lots landscaped with amazing ideas. This year the theme is water. Entry is 2 €

Public swimming pools: There are two pools down in the park by the river. One is indoors with heated water and the other is outside without heating. The complex also has a Turkish bath and a small gymnasium. Entry is 2.50€ for adults and 1€ for children.

Boating: Down on the river you can rent rowing boats for 2.50€

Though renting a tourist apartment is not free it is certainly the most cost effective form of accommodation for your stay in Allariz. Ideas low cost para el verano

La crisis nos aprieta a todos, pero también nos merecemos un descanso, aunque sea corto. Hemos preparado una lista de cosas que se pueden hacer en Allariz, algunas completamente gratis, otras por muy poco dinero.

Qué hacer por 0 euros.

Senderismo: Allariz cuenta con más de 100 km de rutas aptas para realizar actividades de senderismo o bicicleta, válidas para cualquier nivel. Los caminos permiten disfrutar de entornos a orillas del río, así como en la montaña desde donde se divisa el valle del Arnoia.

Baños y áreas de pic nic: A lo largo del río Arnoia y sin salir de Allariz, hay más de 10 lugares en los que uno puede relajarse, leer, o tomar un baño rodeado de naturaleza y organizar un pic nic, algunas incluso disponen de barbacoas.

Visitar el casco histórico: Un paseo por el pasado medieval de Galicia, iglesias, monasterios, pazos, casas grandes y calles empedradas.

Mercados de Allariz: Los días 1 y 15 de cada mes tenemos la tradicional feria que ahora se completa cada sábado con el mercado de la biosfera, pero además en  septiembre se celebra las ferias del dulce y de la artesanía.

Internet y lectura: En la biblioteca municipal encontrarás acceso gratuito a Internet y una amplia colección de libros. Algunos bares y cafés de Allariz disponen también de WIFI y en la mayoría hay varios periódicos disponibles

Practicar deportes: Existen campos y pistas gratuitas de Futbol, baloncesto y tenis. Y también puedes nadar en el río o hacer piragüismo, si tienes piragüa.

Fiestas etnograficas: El 21 de julio la siega, 28 de julio la malla, 3 de agosto la molienda y el 4 de agosto la hornada.

Otras fiestas: del 13 al 15 de julio San Benito, La Empanada 18 al 19 de agosto.

VISITAS CURIOSAS: En Penamá, uno de los montes de Allariz, se crían vacas limiás en libertad, bueno, en semilibertad, por que están rodeadas de una alambrada, pero los prados son inmensos y puedes ver un paisaje insólito a menos de 10 minutos del centro de Allariz.

En el REXO, se crían ovejas lachas con las que se produce un excelente queso. Lo más increíble es que estas ovejas pastan en lugares que han sido pintados por el artista vasco Agustín Ibarrola, quien creó un paisaje desconcertante de enormes piedras pintadas y árboles decorados.

En San Salvador se crían burros, en realidad se acoge a burros abandonados y se les cuida, también se emplean para hacer actividades con personas discapacitadas.

Con morbo. En Santa Mariña, a 7 minutos del centro de Allariz esta uno de los lugares más inquietantes de Galicia, en el pueblo en el que los romanos torturaron y sacrificaron a la santa. El horno en el que la quemaron es visita obligada.  

Con alma o ánimas. En lo alto del monte de San Cibrao, además de una vista increíble, podrás ver el interior de las tumbas castrexas llamadas mámoas, mezcladas con distintas “instalaciones” civiles y religiosas. Hay quien dice que aquí el ambiente es… raro

Mirar y probar: En algunas calles del centro están los famosos out let de Allariz. Durante la semana es mejor el momento para visitarlos, si quieres que esta actividad siga siendo de 0 euros, limítate a mirar y probar

Que hacer por menos de 3 euros

Ir de Museos: Allariz cuenta varios museos: Del cuero, del molino, del juguete, 2 de arte sacro, y la fundación Vicente Risco, la entrada a cada uno cuesta 1€, si compras un bono; por  3.50€ puedes ver todos.

Festival internacional de jardines: Un espectáculo de color e imaginación aplicada a la jardinería. Varios diseñadores internacionales compiten en este festival con parcelas ajardinadas con sorprendentes ideas. Entrada 2€.

Piscinas municipales: De agua fría y caliente, con baño turco y gimnasio y rodeadas de una gran extensión de césped. Pasar el día cuesta 1€ a los niños y 2,50€ a los mayores.

Paseos en Barca: En la alameda de Allariz se puede alquilar una barca para recorrer el río. No es imprescindible saber remar, te costará un poco al principio pero es fácil. Precio: 2.50€

Ir de vinos: Si no eres muy exigente y te conformas con el vino de la casa, en muchos bares de Allariz el precio está entre 0´80€ y 1´20€, algunos incluso incluyen tapa.

Ir de chupitos: En muchos bares de Allariz el chupito (licor café, hierbas, aguardiente, o crema de aguardiente) está a 1€

Festa do Boi 2012

Estamos en plena "Festa do Boi" Allariz se ha transformado por una semana, en el pueblo más animado de Galicia. Para los que no conozcan la fiesta, recomendamos este video de Lonely Planet, en el que esta prestigiosa guia de viajes, nos adentra en los secretos de una de las celebraciones con más adrenalina que conocemos.

Allariz Bull Festival (Festa do Boi)

If you are thinking of wandering around the historic centre of Allariz during the first week of June then it would be best to strap on a pair of running shoes and be prepared to get a move on if you want to avoid coming face to face with 1000 kilos of agitated beef steak. The Bull Festival is upon us.

    Unlike Pamplona, in Allariz one bull at a time is let loose to run the narrow cobblestoned streets. Only vaguely under control of the ten or so straining men at the other end of the rope from the horn activity the bull basically thunders around in pretty well any direction it wants. There will be plenty of people prepared to run ahead of the bull in a test of their nerve and speed – some who have trained for months and others whose training would appear to consist solely of drinking copious amounts of beer just minutes before setting off; a good recipe for broken bones and a ride to Ourense hospital. My advice is to forgo the adrenalin rush and find a safe vantage point to watch in safety. There are plenty of other activities going on during the week with traditional music groups performing during the day and night, special baby bull runs for the children and a large communal dinner for all the people who live in Allariz.
   

This is also the festival of Corpus Christi so early on Sunday the women of Allariz rise early and decorate the streets with flowers in preparation for the parade of the Corpus led by the priest. Allariz is an attractive village but it is even more so when filled with flowers

 The Festa do Boi of 2012 will be held from June 02 to June 10 and the officially published times of the bull run are as follows but I recommend that you check the posters at each entrance to the old city which will have any changes listed. Best of all keep an ear out for the sound of the extremely loud “bomb” fireworks that are set off as a warning the bull is about to be released and then again when the run is over.

Festa do boi 2012

Allariz se prepara para "A festa do Boi" ocho días de celebración y tradición que llenan el pueblo de gente y de animación.
Aunque la mayoría de las personas que nos visitan vienen a "correr o boi" esta fiesta es mucho más que carreras y vamos a darte algunas pistas de otras cosas interesantes para estos días.
Inicialmente la fiesta se celebraba solo el fin de semana que coincidía con el Corpus Cristi, pero debido a la masificación, los vecinos pidieron que se ampliaran los días y así poder disfrutar de las carreras del boi durante la semana, cuando estamos sólo los del pueblo, por eso ahora se celebran desde el fin de semana anterior al Corpus.

Si no eres de Allariz y no puedes estar aquí durante la semana, te recomendamos que vengas el primer fin de semana, ya que la fiesta es la misma, pero con menos gente y algunos atractivos que no existen el segundo. Un grupo numeroso de vecinos representa el origen de esta fiesta en un teatro de calle que este año tiene como novedad que se ha transformado en un musical. Los actores recorren las calles disfrazados de época, recreando el siglo XIV, cuando Xan de Arzua decidió dejar su herencia al pueblo para que cada Corpus se pusiese un boi delante de la procesión para espantar a los judíos que se mofaban de los cristianos. Esta representación, se hace el domingo día 3 de junio a las 12:00h.
Si tienes tiempo y puedes pasar aquí la semana o parte de ella, podrás disfrutar de la fiesta como a nosotros nos gusta, corriendo de verdad y sin peligros, incluidas las carreras de las 008:00h, que en fin de semana se han suspendido por culpa de los borrachos intrépidos. Cada día de la semana hay una cosa distinta, el lunes, por ejemplo, está dedicado a los niños y se hace una carrera especial para ellos a las 18:30h, en la que se utiliza un boi de cartón piedra.
Si no tienes otra posibilidad más que venir el segundo fin de semana, primero desearte suerte y recomendarte que no corras, es demasiado peligroso, no por el boi, si no por la cantidad de gente que se apelotona en los perores sitios, algunos incluso con carritos de bebes.

Pero aun estos días hay momentos de tranquilidad y sorpresa, por ejemplo la procesión del Corpus el domingo por la mañana. Si no eres de procesiones puedes visitar las calles adornadas con alfombras de flores antes de procesión.No son tan espectaculares como en Ponteareas, pero como son dentro del casco histórico, le dan al pueblo un aspecto realmente increíble. Si te quedas a  la procesión, podrá ver también algo curioso, justo detrás del último participante en la misma, va el equipo de limpieza municipal recogiendo todas la flores, por que nada más finalizar la procesión... la juerga continúa. y sale el boi.

Karlene Davis dirige en Sudamérica la oficina para el comercio y la empresa de Nueva Zelanda, que tiene su sede en Sao Paulo, Brasil.   

Karlene, y su marido Ian, hablaron conmigo al final de su semana de vacaciones en Allariz. Ambos llevan una vida agitada y llena de tensiones, asi que buscaron un lugar alejado y no demasiado turistico en Europa, escogiern Allariz por que unos amigos se lo recomendaron.
